Do you have what it takes to be a Teacher?

Most teachers would agree that holding such a prestigious position on behalf of the world’s youth is a very honorable job. It requires years of education and training and it takes an extremely special type of person to pull it off successfully. Being a teacher is incredibly rewarding and it can also be fun, but on the same token it also comes with its own set of unique challenges. At the end of the day, a good instructor or mentor will most likely be exhausted yet satisfied with their accomplishments. So, do you have what it takes to be a teacher?

The Hours of Commitment can be Daunting

A lot of times, today’s teachers must perform several duties outside their regular work hours. This commitment might include responsibilities such as after hosting various school programs, leading parent-teacher or staff meetings, tutoring students, or fostering a sense of community with your students and faculty through extracurricular activities. Although the thought might seem overwhelming at first, a beloved teacher is bound to become a fixture in their chosen school. With such an honor comes a responsibility to be present and accessible to students and staff at all times.

Sometimes it gets Personal

As much as the average teacher likes to perform their duties with professionalism, it can sometimes be difficult to avoid getting attached to the students in a class. As a devoted teacher you will be putting your heart and soul into your lesson plans, and it will be hard not to care about whether or not your students succeed with the information you give them. On top of that, modern teachers are often seen as trusted confidants by their pupils, which means that a certain level of respect and compassion are needed just to do the job correctly. Do you have what it takes to be a teacher? Can you care about your students’ lives without going home each night with a broken heart?

The Pay won’t make you Rich

Unfortunately, sports stars, supermodels, and celebrity chefs make significantly more than the educators of the world. In an alternate universe, a teacher might make millions doing what they do for tomorrow’s future, but in the here and now that is just not the case. Teachers are some of the lowest paid professionals these days, but your level of commitment to your students should never be a reflection of your rather low income. You will be choosing to be a teacher, and your reasons for making such a decision should be centered on your love of education and of children, and never based on how much money you should be making.

Finding the Perfect School can be Difficult

As a teacher you will eventually settle into your own unique style of giving instruction to your students. Not all schools will be a match for you, and so it may take some time for you to locate the place you fit in the most. Be patient and remember the importance of finding a compatible establishment. At the end of the day, your position will allow you to realize if you truly have what it takes to be a teacher or not.
